The first 58 stories along with the Detective Handbook are considered by most collectors to form the Hardy Boys canon. Generally speaking, the 1959-1973 revisions of the first 38 titles and the 1972 revision of the Detective Handbook are not considered originals, though some consider these 39 rewrites part of the canon. It can also be argued that the REAL magic of the original series ended in the mid-1960s, closing no later than title #45 The Mystery of the Spiral Bridge, when the writing began to simplify ever further, becoming more modern in style, with little atmosphere, and more 'socially relevant' to the times, losing the 'timeless' sense of the original titles; By this point, most of the re-writes were in place, further stripping the series of their quaint charm; The sense that the series had run out of fresh ideas for stories, and where now 'generic' was palpable; Adding to this, the demographic for the books had gone through such extreme transformation during the mid 1960s, more so than at any point in their history, that the series was in danger of becoming irrelevant as 'boys adventure books' in the traditional sense.
